CANES ( CLICK HERE for MEMBERS version )
( Care , light wipe over with damp cloth , keep lightly oiled , English Goddard's products are the best available and contain bee's wax . Over time the bees wax will protect the outer surface and gives an aged appearance . All wooden items should have an exterior coating . Do not seal the surface . It is important not to let canes go dry or they will split ( some like to keep them in linseed oil , boiled is slightly more expensive but does not stain clothing as much as raw oil does ) . Make sure that the end of the cane is rounded and do not use if dry or split . Do not use anything containing silicone on wooden implements . As with all implements , wipe with a mild disinfectant after use . Avoid hitting hard objects such as desk tops . Over time , canes will revert to their natural shape . These bends may be forced out by applying pressure with the thumb as the cane is held in the hand . Keeping canes in bundles with rubber bands or plastic coated wire ties ( polish and oil can attack rubber bands ) will help to keep them straight . Store in a dry place , but do not allow to dry out . A ventilated bathroom will give the right level of humidity . )
For many , the cane is the symbol of corporal punishment . Canes are made from bamboo and synthetic materials . They are made in a variety of sizes , some have handles . The most common handle is the crook handle which was used to allow the cane to be hung on a hook . A cane can be an awesome weapon .
They must be brought down parallel to the bottom or the end may bruise the skin , leaving " tip " marks . Canes are also called " the stick " or " the rod " .
The most popular caning position is the bending over position but canes can be used in other positions , particularly lying ( see POSITIONS ) .
Cane stock comes from Southeast Asia .
Several varieties are used , Kaboo is preferred as it is both flexible and strong .
Rattan is the most common type of cane stock :
The cane replaced the birch in England from the mid to late 1800's , canes were seen as being less likely to break the skin and as providing a more measured and constant punishment . The Victorians liked a style called " Dragoon " locally , which is more rigid than ordinary rattan . It has a feel which is a cross between rattan and oak dowel rod .
Most canes are around 3/8 ths of an inch thick and from 30 to 40 inches long . The English like to use canes up to 48 inches long ( the longer they are , the greater the impact , but also the harder to use ) . Thin canes sting but do not make much noise . Canes are held from the thicker end of the taper .
A good cane is flexible .

" Since this book along with the others in this series do fit inside a toybag , I could see where someone about to do a caning scene might quickly refer to this for a few pointers before proceeding . This book is not a " beginners caning book " however , again more of a quick review before heading on . Still it has great information readily available at a moment's glance . "
